Introduction into streptococcal infections
During the past few years there has been much talk about long covid sufferers. Although this seemed new to many, this is something humanity has been dealing ever since we were affected by pathogens. Have you ever heard someone say: “I have not been well since I had influenza” or “I haven’t felt quite right since I had shingles” or “I haven’t felt normal since that throat infection” and so on?
This is exactly what I am writing about here. Many viruses and bacteria leave their imprint in us and if we don't look after our health they will give long lasting suffering which can even be fatal in some cases.
In this post I am focusing on streptococcal infection. Most of us are familiar with strep throat, which is quite common. There are however a lot more infections that can be caused by one of the types of streptococcus bacteria.
There are 4 main groups of streptococci and group A and B are the most common:
Group A: affect mainly the throat and skin:
-scarlet fever affects both the throat and the skin
-impetigo, erysipelas, cellulitis
Group B: infections of the blood, pneumonia, bone and joint infections, skin.
Which post streptococcal disorders do we see?
-Rheumatic fever which can affect the joints and the heart
-Paediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders
-Post streptococcal arthritis which again affects the joints and bones and can also affect the heart and the brain
-Post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis (kidney infection)
While the strep throat and skin reactions can be the first signs of a streptococcal infection, many other organs and tissues can be affected if the chronic inflammation sets in.
During the following weeks I will go through some of these conditions in more detail and explain how it is managed homeopathically.
